Natoma woman indicted in drug case

WICHITA -- A federal grand jury in Wichita has indicted a Natoma resident in relation to a drug trafficking case out of Harvey County, U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch reported Tuesday.

Karla Kay Aikman, 46, of Natoma, and Michael Scott Berg, 34, and Jaimi Michelle Lettau, 29, both of Newton, were each charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Berg and Lettau also are charged with unlawful possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

The crimes are alleged to have occurred July 22 and 23 in Harvey County.

If convicted, the trio face possible sentences of between 10 years and life in prison for each methamphetamine charge. The penalty for a firearms conviction could give Berg and Lettau additional sentences of between five years and life in prison.

Student returns stolen painting to KU

LAWRENCE -- A University of Kansas student returned a $10,000 portrait last week that was stolen from a residence hall.

University police say the painting of Robert Fred Ellsworth Sr. was taken in mid-May from the entryway of Fred Ellsworth Hall.

Capt. Schuyler Bailey said the student who stole the painting said the theft was a prank.

Police said no arrests had been made. The case will be sent to the Douglas County district attorney's office to determine whether charges will be filed.

Meanwhile, Bailey says police are still investigating an unrelated string of thefts and vandalism last spring involving old, rare books at Watson Library.
