Brookville man in critical condition after wreck

6/28/2009

A 24-year-old Brookville man was in critical condition Sunday after his pickup truck went off the side of the road on Kansas Highway 140 and overturned several times.

Dillon J. Bradford was transported by Ellsworth County Emergency Medical Services to Salina Regional Health Center and then transported by Lifestar to Wesley Medical Center after the crash at 4:55 a.m. about 13 miles east of Ellsworth.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, Bradford was driving west when his truck left the road. He overcorrected, entered the south ditch sideways and striking a culvert sign. The vehicle overturned several times and came to rest on the driver’s side.
Bradford was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report.

Ultimatly wearing the seatbelt should be the riders choice. It is after all their life and someone shouldn't dictate what they can or can't do. Sometimes they save lives sometimes they don't. It's a risk a person chooses to take. I pray that he makes it through this!

ER Junkie says....
Working in emergency medicine for several years has taught me several lessons and one of the most important is ALWAYS WEAR MY SEATBELT. I realize that in some rare cases the occupants in a vehicle actually survive a crash because they did not buckle up but those are do few and far between. We should all be thankful that the injured person in this story - Dillon - is alive and hopefully will have a fully recovery and leave the judgements to the Big Man upstairs. Harsh words said by strangers do not help the situation but I believe that prayers do - so may God bless Dillon and all of his family and friends during this difficult time.

Dillon is a great person and far from an idiot- I wish him a speedy recovery - Seat Belt or No Seat Belt I am just glad he is still here. Dillon - You are in my thoughts and prayers!! Just a Mom from the Ell-Saline Class of 2003.

People need to be more considerate of ones family before they open their mouths with rude comments. Dillons and good person!! We all make mistakes. My thoughts and prayers are with Dillon and family.

Wear the Belt says....
Seat belts save lives and idiots are ejected and crushed. The fact is you have a better chance of survival when inside a steel cage than getting thrown out to be crushed and run over by traffic. Look at NASCAR drivers - would they survive if they were ejected from their vehicles in a crash? No way. They're safer with belts on.

Like a Brother says....
I have pictures of the truck after we picked it up at the impound in Ellsworth, and all involved agree: being ejected saved Dillon's life. The roof is flush with the top of the hood, his neck would have been broken and his injuries would have been far worse. I agree that it is crucial to buckle up, but for once it saved someone's life to NOT have a seatbelt on. Stop commenting on subjects that you know nothing about. His friends and family are all on this site and your ridiculous, misplaced speculations are just that. God forbid your friends ever make any mistakes.

Why do people? says....
Everyone has a time that they are going to die. Wether you have your seat belt on or not. I have never met Dillon or his family, but I am praying for his recovery. I agree seat belt use should be up to the user. My dad was killed in a pickup accident, he was thrown from the vehicle, but this was in 1969 and seat belts werent even installed in the vehicle. You can't go on if he would have had it on he would have walked away, because you never know the outcome. Yes I do wear mine, but that is my choice, even if it wasn't the law.

Sometimes the truth hurts says....
I agree that posters should be a bit more sensitive to the idea that friends and family of the person being discussed could read your opinions. However, I think it is important to bring up the fact that a seat belt could have spared Dillon a lot of his injuries. He could be recuperating in SRHC, the Ellsworth hospital, or he could have even walked away from the accident. But instead, he is in critical condition in Wichita. The facts are that more lives are saved by wearing seat belts than are taken. I had a friend who was killed in a roll over accident about three years ago. He was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected. The car landed on him. The other two occupants were wearing their seat belts, they stayed inside the car and walked away with a couple of scratches. I sincerely hope that Dillon pulls through and has no lasting effects from this terrible accident. But I also hope that if he does survive his ordeal, that he learns a lesson from it.

The fact of the matter is this: seatbelt or not, what happened, happened. Dillon now has to live with the consequences of his actions. Let's just hope he DOES live through it. Negative comments help nobody get through a rough time like this. Your opinions are just that...YOURS...but maybe you should be kind enough to re-think what you say when people are reeling with the realities that this situation has presented. There is no need to add insult to injury. Please be respectful of the feelings of people who know and love Dillon...those same people may very well read what you have to say. Just think of how you would feel if the situation was reversed. As a concerned friend, regardless of what happened, I just wish for his recovery at this time.

lived to tell says....
I agree concerned friend, the last wreck I was in if I had been wearing my seatbelt the doctors told that there was a 99% chance that I would died in the accident, instead I was ejected and live to tell about it.

That's not fair because seat belts also kill people! It should be your own choice whether you wear a seat belt or not! Idiots should keep their stupid comments to themselves!

Buckle Up: 3 seconds says....
Seat belts save lives. How many times do we have to pound that into the heads of idiots before they learn?
