Man blames Salina crash on 'brain freeze'

6/10/2008
TIM UNRUH
A man said he crashed his car into the front steps of a house on South Fifth Street Tuesday afternoon while he was drinking a cold drink that gave him a “brain freeze.”
Robert M. Schulz, 66, Salina, told Salina police he had just purchased the flavored, frozen drink from a Sonic restaurant and was drinking it while traveling east on East Crawford after 3:45 p.m.
Schulz said he suffered a “brain freeze,” followed by a “chest freeze,” causing him to loose control, leave the street and crash into the front steps of the home at 703 S. Fifth, said Desk Officer Brandon Tomson.
Schulz was taken by ambulance to Salina Regional Health Center, where he was treated and released.
The house is owned by Donald Hoerner.

You have more traffic and crime in California because you have more people there. DUH! Don't even try to make us feel sorry for you because you live there. The majority of the "good people" you speak of in Salina are rude, inconsiderate and have a horrible time accepting change. This town is small because those "good people" chase everyone away with their wonderful personalities. I can't wait to move away from here (and am moving away soon) because of all the "good people".

It actually happened to me. I thought I was having a heart attack. My heart stopped beating after I had a brainfreeze. I searched the internet and found out that it is a natural body reaction to cold temperature. It's kinda like having hypothermia. My body thought that I was having hypothermia. I almost got rushed to the hospital. My heart was inconsistent with its beating then after a few seconds it came back to normal. Damn brainfreeze!!

I am from another town in Ks, and was reading this online paper just to see what was new in Salina. I must say, I am quite surprised at the number of people on here complaining about Salina. Perhaps you people have no idea, but you are the real fools. If it is so bad, move away! You just make yourself look ignorant complaining about the city you live in. If it's that bad, DO SOMETHING TO MAKE IT BETTER! Take pride in your community.

For crying out loud. Brain freeze is NOT a viable excuse for wrecking your car into a HOUSE!!!If having to go to the bathroom isn't an excuse for speeding then a brain freeze isn't an excuse for destroying someone's house with your car!!!!!!

OMG!! Hilarious. I read this in a local free newspaper here in VA that's full of the weirdiest news. I was at work and when I saw "Salina, KS." I fell out laughing and had to tell all my co-workers. For some reasons, the Sonics out here just don't taste as good as that one on Santa Fe...maybe that's a good thing!!

Goodness People !! Yep, I saw it on the national news, too, and it makes me embarrassed to say I live here. They may as well had a banjo playing in the background while airing the story....BING BING BING BING. They should have added..."And while Mr. So and So was freezing his brain and running into a house he spilled his grape slushy all over his bib overalls."

Poor man. I've had brain freeze - my own fault - eating or drinking cold item too fast. Maybe he thought he was having a heart attack, was scared and lost control of his car. Bless his heart. I'm sure they took him to the hospital because of the wreck NOT the brain freeze. Some of you may think this article not news worthy, but it's nice to read something that is humorous once in awhile. Bet the person whose house was hit didn't find it so funny - but then again now he can have a property "face lift" compliments of the drivers insurance.

I work at the Sonic mentioned in the story. the slush is ICE! Sucking down 10 to 15 ounces isn't the smartest thing to do. Many people buy different sizes of this drink in all our flavors. This is the first I've heard of such a severe reaction. It's not the drink, its how its used...

how would they have treated him!? Told him to take his thumb and push on the roof of his mouth!? come on, then again with the doctors we have in this town I wouldn't be surprise they told him to do that, or prescribe over the counter meds

My husband also had severe brain freeze and chest freeze from that same drink about 2 weeks ago. We were still in the parking lot so we pulled out of the way. It took a few minutes before he felt good enough to drive. I think Sonic needs to evaluate this drink before something serious happens.
