Improvement projects funded by block grants
By the Salina Journal
Forty-four Kansas communities will share a total of $13,081,660, including $4,370,331 in federal stimulus dollars, through the Community Development Block Grant program, the Kansas Department of Commerce announced.
About $21 million in federal community development block grant funds have been awarded to Kansas communities this year.
The program provides federal funds to local governments for development of housing, public facilities and economic development. To be awarded funds, local government entities must meet at least one of three objectives: benefit low and moderate-income persons, prevent or eliminate slums and blight, or resolve an urgent need where local resources are not available to do so.
The Kansas Department of Commerce has distributed more than $245 million in community development block grant funding since 1998.
Grant recipients from central and northwest Kansas included:
nBird City -- $308,740 to rehabilitate 12 housing units and demolish three dilapidated unsafe residential structures.
