Beef production expert to speak
MINNEAPOLIS -- K-State Research and Extension beef production expert Larry Hollis will discuss a new way of testing cattle for Bovine Virus Diarrhea at a cattle program beginning at 5 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Minneapolis.
Known as PI, the procedure involves taking a sample of flesh from a calf's ear and testing it, said Carl Garten, director of Central Kansas Extension District 3. All animals can get BVD, he said, but some are carriers of the virus and should be removed from the herd.
Hollis also will discuss new animal health products, using injectable medicines and levels of vaccine protection.
K-State rangeland scientist Bob Gillen will talk about summer grazing systems.
A meal is offered for $5. Reservations should be made by noon Jan. 16 by calling the extension district's Salina office, 309-5850, or the Minneapolis office, (785) 392-2147.
