Statehood Ball planned in Abilene
ABILENE -- The Dickinson County Historical Society will sponsor the 17th annual Kansas Statehood Ball from 7 to 10 p.m. Jan. 28 at Sterl Hall in Eisenhower Park.
The event is geared toward the entire family. Tickets cost $5 for adults, $3 for members of the historical society and $2 for children ages 3 to 12.
Robert Thomas of Fort Scott will be the preceptor, dance instructor and social director. He and his wife, Anita, demonstrate dances from the 1860s, including the Virginia Reel, Jenny Lind Polka and the Hat Dance. Robert Thomas also teaches 1860 ballroom etiquette.
Music is provided by the Kansas Brigade Band, assisted by Peggy Meuli on the piano. The band is made up of area musicians and has performed for nearly 20 years for Civil War events around the state.
