If your family is without plans for the Fourth of July, Salina has a fun-filled day lined up.

The 34th annual Play Day in the Park will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at Oakdale Park. The celebration is sponsored by the Salina Parks and Recreation Department.

Mayor Luci Larson will welcome the guests, and that will be followed by a day of free activities.

Tim Kerbs, recreation program supervisor, said there will be plenty of things to do for everyone.

"(There will be) nearly 20 old-fashioned games, with free buttons, balloons and prizes for all," Kerbs said.

Free hot dogs, watermelon, desserts and soft drinks will be provided again this year by the Parks and Recreation Department with the help of Salina chef Bill Fekas.

Entertainment at the Eric Stein Stage will be provided by such performers as Van's German Band and the Salina Municipal Band.

The Salina Breakfast Bandits AMBUCS will once again host a concert and the Skyfire fireworks show.

John Ziegler, who helps organize the event, said the public is welcome to attend the free event.

Spectators are asked to park in the East Crawford Recreation Area on Markley Road. Ziegler said the seating area will be by softball diamonds No. 3 and 4.

A prefireworks concert featuring the Soul Preachers will be from 7 to 9 p.m. The fireworks are scheduled for 10 p.m.

"It will be a combination of patriotic, pop and country," Ziegler said.

Music corresponding with the fireworks show will be broadcast through speakers on the stage, as well as on Salina AM radio station KSAL 1150.

Ziegler said personal fireworks are prohibited in the area.

"Several officers will be patrolling, so remember fireworks are illegal in the city," he said.

The AMBUCS still are seeking donations to support the show. Money may be sent to Skyfire AMBUCS, 654 Sylvan Place, Salina 67401. Any money not used for this year's show will be put toward next year's show.
