As too spanking. salinamom is correct. It is NOT against the law too spank your child(ren). Was told by an officer at one point that 3 - 4 swats, open handed, on the buttocks is perfectly legal. Were it becomes illegal is when belts, boards, whatever is used and or you leave bruises. At that point it leaves the realm of a spanking and enters the realm of abuse.
However, the lack of spankings isn't the only problem. The parents need too take back the household and to lay down the law. A lot of parents don't do this, the kids run the house are not taught respect and get away with a lot of crap before anything serious is done about it. This includes the legal system and there 'lets baby the juveniles' stance. I say when they commit there first crime, automatic 1 year probation, then escalate it from there. Show the kids that there actions have serious consequences.

A couple of weeks ago my daughter reported to the manager of Salina Wal-Mart that there were 2 empty DVD boxes in the trash can in ladies bathroom, he couldn't have been more uninterested. The needy thing for the jell-o in the above matter was probably for booze made
jell-o shots to go along with the playstation fun.

If your criminal defense consists of, "Hey, she was a good friend and she needed all that stuff given to her for free", then you've got a long stretch behind bars waiting for you until you wise up to the laws against theft.

I have worked LP in Sears and Dillards..employees many employees were either involved or facilitated theft from the stores. The only time they were interested in stopping theft is when a person of color was involved. "It's hey this stuff is ours to steal".

to the comment on the spanking........ I'm really not sure what information the parents of Salina have gotten but, It is NOT against the law to spank your children. Spank your kids, take their belongings away, do what you have to do as a parent to make sure that your child is raised properly. 90% of the parents here don't even care. They don't care what the kids grades are, where the kids are at, who their teachers are, who their hanging out with, THAT MY FIREND IS THE PROBLEM WITH SALINA KIDS THESE DAYS. I really wish parents would stop with this "we can't spank our kids" SALINA.... get control of the children now days... Parents want yo complain about how the kids are acting, maybe you should look in the mirror and see what your doing to keep them from acting this way.

Amen....If kids was to get spankings like we did when we were kids there WOULD NOT be as much crime as there is today. Also if walmart did do the apps in person and not computer they would have a better chance at knowing who they hire.

Employers, this should be part of your hiring process. Ask teens this question before hiring, "If your friend was in need, would you let them walk out of the store with some items they could really use without paying for them?"

just as said before, the spanking was a way to show kids who is in charge, and to show forth what is expected. i'm not for child abuse but every now and then, we need to show them who is the one provider. if not who will? this is the reason why the US is in the state it is, i bet if things changed a bit and the law would allow a spanking, things would change not as a ignorant form but not to support child abuse though.

I'm a news buff. Have been for years. I truely believe the economy is taking its toll on all of us. I go out at 10:30am Its like 3:30 or 5:00 traffic. People are layed off. You can see an feel the stress in this town. I would like to mention I read an article the other day Selling Salina on its Strength date 2-13-2009 Salina Journal.I wrote a comment on it. I have not looked it up to see if they posted it. I just happen to pop it up. Man I was very upset! If I can get that upset at home well I venture to say its not going to take much for me to go off! I stay home lately because of whats going on. Its bad out there! And I do'nt think we are going to get our jobs back any time soon. Its to bad the kids had to see that, sounds like you were just trying to have a good time. When I'm out I try to smile a lot even if I'm in a bad mood take the extra mile to move out of the way in stores. But lately I stay home. Did you check and make sure you paid for everything HA.

More kids should HAVE to work! It certainly didn't hurt me while growing up on the farm, and you would NEVER catch any of us EVER shoplifting or doing drugs. Maybe they should lower the age limit for child labor and allow children to contribute for once! I am sooo sick of the entitled little wretches that run around acting like they are OWED everything for NO effort on their part. What a bunch of enabled little brats. These kids will never make it in the real world, instead they will, and are, making our world He##!!!!

"Walmart gets what they deserve for hiring a teenage as a cashier." What DO they deserve for hiring teenagers?? The vast majority of teenagers are really pretty good kids. They need jobs to earn money for a variety of reasons. Maybe they need to help the family out in these uncertain economic times. Walmart, Dillons, Target, Kmart, etc. need teenagers just as much as the teenagers need them. Without teenages in the workforce who would take your order at a fast food restaurant? Let's not take the businesses to task for hiring teens. Let's focus on the single teen that was caught breaking the law.

How absurd is it that the Salina school board is considering joining the lawsuit against the state for aid to schools? In a down and almost out economy like we have currently it's stupidity. We've come to the point the "for the kids" is a hollow cry from the leaders of the school system. We keep throwing money at education and we keep getting less results. Maybe we could do without one or two "directors" in the didtrict management structure. That alone would save $200,000 plus benefits. Oopps, that would mean that the other directors and the superintendant would have to pick up the slack. School systems, just like the private sector need to live WITHIN their means. Filing suit against the state to get money that's not there only helps the attorneys for the schools.

Well how about that & now how about this- my 11 year old nephew & 13 years old neice were standing next to the exit doors @ walmart near smart style waiting for me to check out not far from them & they & I & many people witnessed a fistfight in the entry way- where the carts are! It was between 2 men & 2 women, my newphew thought the 2 males were just goofing around then they were full on fighting, one had a bloody face. Thankfully a man who looked to be a security guard & a cop got their quick. Are times so tough that people just blow, or are people just that stupid & immature? To not feel safe in Walmart in Salina on an early Sunday evening is absurd to me. Crime is up people, theft & fistfights-what's next. We need to take back our town! My neighbors who live accross the street said one evening a few weeks ago that they saw 2 "kids" looking in cars with flashlights- mine was one of them. They called the police. By the time they got here those "kids" were long gone. The police said that they didn't committ a crime because they didn't lift any door handles! My jaw hit the floor when I heard that! I live in a nice area with lots of familes & we all know each other, I feel like I live in the wild wild west!

Ok, seriously-fighting the school board to be able to dance the way you want should never be grouped into the same category as outright stealing. There is a difference between lack of respect for authority and standing up for what you believe. I do believe that this country was started by people who had "lack of respect for authority" Yes, it is wrong on any level to steal, but comparing this to the dancing thing is just wrong.

Real Life Parallels says....
The parallels between this alleged thievery by a teen worker and teens refusing to obey the school board? Simple. Both involve one or more teens who think they can do what they want, disrespect authority, and make their own rules. The principles are the same in both cases. When you're a student in school, you are subject to school authorities, just as when you're an employee in a store. Employers should never hire teens who flip the bird to school authorities.

TJ, I believe the poster to whom you refer was making the point that there is a serious problem in our society in that young people have a serious lack of respect for authority and a lack of understanding that their actions have consequences. I also doubt that "every store has tons" of employees who do this. If that were the case these thefts (for that is what they are) would be reported. I would also like the poster who made that comment to define "tons of employees". Hyperbole does NOT make you sound intelligent.

Hmmm says....
Seventeen year old female accused of letting her friends steal things from the store, while she worked as a cashier. Isn't she about the same age as the high school teens who decided they would tell off the school board so they could "do the grind"? Lack of respect for authority leads to consequences such as this. Congrats parents, you've raised a generation of jailbirds who despise the law and authority. Telling off the school board was only a symptom of a deeper problem.
