K-State knocks off No. 23 Texas A M

MANHATTAN -- Wednesday marked the first time Kansas State defeated a ranked opponent in more than two years as the Wildcats (9-14, 3-10 Big 12) upended No. 23 Texas A M Aggies (14-7, 7-6) in five sets 25-20, 25-27, 25-22, 21-25, 16-14.

Libero Lauren Mathewson set a school record for digs in a match with 41, one shy of the Big 12 record set last week by Iowa State's Ashley Mass. Senior middle blocker Kelsey Chipman now is second on the school's all-time block assists chart with 435.

Chipman also had a big night attacking with 18 kills on 36 swings without a single error. Outside hitter JuliAnne Chisholm led the way with 20 kills, while setter Soriana Pacheco tied her career-high in assists with 61.

The last time K-State defeated a ranked opponent was Aug. 24, 2007, when the Wildcats upended No. 14 Cal Poly in five sets on a neutral court.

"Proud. I think that's the best word for it," K-State coach Suzie Fritz said. "We willed ourselves to that one"

A M was at match point after an attack by Caitlyn Donahue sailed long, but Donahue put down a kill on the next play to even the score at 14-14. K-State then got back-to-back match-winning kills by Chisholm, who finished the night with 20 kills.

The Wildcats return to the court Sunday when they entertain Texas Tech at 6 p.m.

Mayfield-led KU sweeps Colorado

BOULDER, Colo. -- Sophomore Allison Mayfield recorded a career-best 21 kills to help lead the University of Kansas volleyball team to its third straight conference road sweep at Colorado on Wednesday night.

The Jayhawks won 25-22, 25-23 and 25-16 for their fourth straight road win. It marks the program's most Big 12 road victories since 2003.

KU improved to 13-10 overall and 5-8 in the conference, while Colorado dropped to 6-17 on the season and 1-13 in the Big 12.

KU junior Karina Garlington, a Denver native playing in front of a hometown crowd, was next with eight kills on a team-high .400 attack percentage.

The Jayhawks play at Oklahoma at 2 p.m. Saturday.
