Decision on park opening to be made Thursday

City Manager Jason Gage said Tuesday that a decision on whether Kenwood Cove, Salina’s $11.4 million aquatic park, will open Saturday will be made by noon Thursday.
Gage said construction crews are optimistic they can be finished with parts of the park by Thursday, despite a forecast of rain through Thursday. Overnight Tuesday in Salina, it rained 0.22 of an inch.
“I wish I could be more optimistic about the weather,” Gage said. “We are hoping the local weathermen can keep the rain away from us.”
Gage and Deputy City Manager Mike Schrage said Monday the park’s opening could be in doubt if a list of safety and construction items created by building services employees had not been completed. As of Tuesday afternoon, Gage said he had not received the list.
Gage and Schrage toured the park shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday to check on the aquatic center’s progress.
Areas still to be completed included concrete decking, the park entrance, fencing on the park’s south side and several minor issues.
Steve Snyder, director of Salina’s parks and recreation department, could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
