Highway Patrol reports 6 fatalities

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported six traffic fatalities statewide over the Thanksgiving holiday in a preliminary report released Tuesday.

Troopers investigated fatal crashes in Butler, Neosho and Stafford counties. Local law enforcement investigated fatality crashes in Nemaha, Douglas and Shawnee counties.

Additionally, troopers reported:

neight DUI-related crashes;

n46 DUI arrests;

n1,684 speeding citations;

n 1,157 motorist assists;

n and 194 safety restraint citations, 54 of which were for child restraints.

Members of the patrol participated in the Special Traffic Enforcement Program sponsored by the Kansas Department of Transportation. The STEP campaign is conducted during high-volume travel holidays in an effort to help reduce the number of impaired drivers on the roads, encourage safety restraint use and promote safe driving habits.

The holiday reporting period ran from 6 p.m. Nov. 25 until 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
