Deputies find crash by having driver listen for sirens

11/4/2009

The Colorado woman called 9-1-1 early Tuesday asking for help, saying she had crashed her car, but had no idea where she was.
Saline County sheriff’s deputies Scott Trembley and David Hamilton found her car in a culvert after driving up and down Interstate Highway 70 with sirens sounding, having the woman tell them, via cell phone, when the sirens appeared to be getting louder or quieter.
The woman’s car had left the highway just after 6 a.m.
Raquel S. Haynes, 21, and her 13-month-old son, Kayden, were not injured, but they couldn’t open the car doors because of the sides of the culvert, said Sheriff Glen Kochanowski.
Haynes had swerved off the side of the road in heavy fog, and then over-corrected, crossing the median and the oncoming lane of traffic and landing in a culvert about two miles east of Brookville Road, Kochanowski said.
