Jones powers KWU men, 72-66

LAWRENCE -- Wes Jones continued his strong start to the season, scoring 18 points and leading Kansas Wesleyan to a 72-66 victory over Haskell Indian Nations on Wednesday.

Jones, a 6-foot-5 forward who played for Phoenix College the previous two seasons, was 7 of 11 from the field, grabbed five rebounds, blocked three shots and had two steals.

Matt Dickman added 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while Matt Jarrett had 10 points and eight rebounds. Joe Harvey and Mike Bartee added nine points apiece off the bench. Harvey also snagged seven rebounds as the Coyotes won the rebounding battle 48-38.

Wesleyan (2-1) trailed 35-31 at halftime but held Haskell to 29 percent shooting in the second half (11 of 38). The Coyotes shot 48.4 percent in the second half (15 of 31) and 45.2 percent for the game (28 of 62).

KWU prevailed despite committing 25 turnovers that led to 18 Haskell points. Haskell had 17 turnovers.

D.J. Fish led Haskell (0-1) with 16 points. Dominic Clichee added 14.

Wesleyan couldn't hold a 14-point second-half lead and fell in its season opener against the No. 25-ranked Indians.

The Coyotes led 31-20 at halftime and increased their lead to 36-22 with 18 1/2 minutes left.

But Haskell (2-1) rallied and used back-to-back 3-pointers late in the game -- the second with 25 seconds left -- to take the 64-62 lead.

Wesleyan's Montric Santee missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Shelby Babcock led KWU with 20 points while Santee scored 14 in her Wesleyan debut. Newcomer Jamie Alexander had nine off the bench.

Wesleyan shot just 30 percent from the field (18 of 60) and was outrebounded 42-26. Babcock had a team-high five rebounds.

The Coyotes stayed close by forcing 34 Haskell turnovers that led to 32 points.
