Students learn to promote peace

As a longtime teacher of international and multicultural education, I was happy to read in a recent Salina Journal article that Salina and Concordia students are studying the United Nations. These students are our future leaders.

With its spirit of global peace through reconciliation, the U.N. is a strong vehicle by which we can act in solidarity with our global neighbors. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Preamble states, "Since wars begin in the minds of (people), it is in the minds of (people) that the defense of peace must be constructed." UNESCO's Constitution states, "Peace must be founded, if not to fail, upon the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind."

As a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia, a member of Pax Christi Salina and a supporter of the Consistent Life organization that sees us threatened by nuclear war, abortion, poverty, racism, the arms race, the death penalty and euthanasia, I congratulate the Model United Nations students and their teachers for studying global peace and reconciliation. We are all challenged to collaborate in protecting the vulnerable, the marginalized and all life on our planet.
