KWU to have coffeehouse night

A variety of local talent will be showcased from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday during the Kansas Wesleyan University Writers' Guild's Coffeehouse Night in the Hauptli Student Center of the Student Activities Center. The event is a part of Wesleyan's pre-Homecoming activities.

Local bands Fish and Fuzz and 3 Bottom Plow are scheduled to perform, as are several groups made up of KWU students and faculty. Additionally, guild members and others will do a variety of readings during the event.

The event is free and open to the public. Free coffee and cookies will be served.

Community Chamber Orchestra to perform

CLAY CENTER -- The cello will be featured during the Community Chamber Orchestra's concert at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Rex Theater.

Clay Center Community High School senior Elizabeth Clark will play the cello solo in "Allegro Appassionato" by Saint-Saens. The instrument on which Clark will perform has a history in Clay County dating back as far as World War I. A six-person cello ensemble will play Liszt's "Liebestraum."

The orchestra will also perform Pachelbel's "Canon in D" and three different dances.

The Community Chamber Orchestra plays without a conductor and includes youth through adults.

Tickets are available in advance from orchestra members or can be purchased at the door beginning at 4 p.m. Tickets cost $5 per person or $13 for a family.

Photography on display at country club

Photographic images of India, taken by Salina artists Dale Cole and Carolyn Wedel, will be on exhibit during the month of October at the Salina Country Club.

The exhibit highlights a recent trip with VOSH International, an organization that supports vision care in poor countries, and is partially funded through the Salina Arts and Humanities Horizons Grant program.

The public can view the exhibit during normal business hours of the Salina Country Club, which is closed Mondays.

'Masks' displayed at ArtXpressions

ArtXpressions Gallery, 113 E. Iron, will display the exhibit "Masks" for the month of October.

The featured artists will be Cal Mahin, Mary Ann Tanking and Ortrud "Tutti" Hauptli with various mask designs.

The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. During First Thursday Art Rush, from 5 to 7 pm. Thursday, the public is invited to meet the "Masks" artists, along with the other 18 exhibiting gallery members.

The gallery has also added of Sean Haugh, a photographer that specializes in railroad car graffiti, as a member artist. His work can be seen during normal gallery hours and the First Thursday event.

Photography classes offered in Abilene

ABILENE -- The Arts Council of Dickinson County is now accepting enrollment forms for Fundamentals of Photography, an adult photography class. The classes are open to adults who have the desire to learn the basic elements of photography for producing quality photos, whether film or digital.

Classes are on Thursdays from 7 to 8 p.m. beginning Oct. 15 and concluding on Nov. 12 in the conference room of the arts council office building, 203 N. Cedar, also known as the Community Resource Center.

The class fee is $25 per student and must be paid upon enrollment. Class size is limited. The enrollment deadline is Oct. 9.

Maine artist to be at Red Barn Studio

LINDSBORG -- Bethany College alumna Nan Justice will be the Red Barn Studio's artist-in-residence Saturday through Oct. 8.

The artist studied at the Virginia Art Institute after leaving Lindsborg. Her work is in oil painting and charcoal. She has been a part of several regional exhibits and has had numerous private commissions.

While at the Red Barn Studio, Justice will focus on oil painting.

The studio, 212 S. Main, is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Educational program on Sandzén offered

LINDSBORG -- A free program is available to area churches, schools, clubs and organizations to tell the story of Birger Sandzén, one of the area's most prominent artists.

Sandzén and the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery were recently voted one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas Art. The gallery showcases his work, as well as hosts exhibits from other guest artists.

The Sandzén Gallery docents have prepared a new PowerPoint program to be given to clubs and organizations. The presentation tells the story of Sandzén and why his legacy has been recognized as one of the eight wonders of Kansas art.

Arrangements for giving the presentation at meetings may be made, with a minimum of two weeks' notice, by calling the gallery at (785) 227-2220.

'Art of War' at McPherson Museum

McPHERSON -- The McPherson Museum & Arts Foundation will display "The Art of War," through Nov. 21.

The exhibit is a tribute to efforts toward peace. It features a display of canvases by Amal Alwan, an Iraqi citizen who painted to feed her family during the bombings of Baghdad. McPherson resident Anne Albright sells her paintings locally to aid Amal and her family.

The oil paintings, created to the sounds of gunfire and bombs, are ironically serene. The canvases, some of which are cut from roller shades for lack of materials, depict pre-war Iraq.

The McPherson Museum & Arts Foundation, 1130 E. Euclid, is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. There is an admission fee.

New Life Drama Company to perform

CONCORDIA -- The New Life Drama Company, a skit drama ministry, will give four area performances.

The initial performance will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Teens For Christ Road Rally in the Little Theater of Rock Hills High School, 701 E. Madison, Mankato.

On Monday, the group will perform at 2 p.m. at Marquis Place, 205 W. 21st, Concordia, and at 3:30 p.m. at Sunset Home, 620 Second Ave., Concordia. That evening, the company also will perform at 7 p.m. at the Cook Theatre of Cloud County Community College, 2221 Campus.

OBERLIN -- Oberlin Arts & Humanities has announced its 2009-10 season.

The schedule includes:

n 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3 -- Jim Salestrom and Suzy Boggus at the Colby Community College Auditorium

n 2 p.m. Oct. 11 -- Wichita Children's Theater at Gateway Theater

n 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 -- theater in the round production of "Harvey" at Gateway Arena

n 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 -- dinner theater with Acoustic Eidolon at Gateway Theater

n 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5 -- Table for 5, a vocal quintet, at Gateway Theater

n 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30 -- Keith West, magician and illusionist, at Gateway Theater

n 2 p.m. Feb. 21 -- Jackie Creamer's Dance Studio at Gateway Theater

n 2 p.m. April 18 -- History of Local Churches starting at Bohemian Hall.

Season tickets cost $60 each and include all season ticket events and one dinner theater. Family season tickets cost $125 and include all season ticket events, all school age youth and two dinner theaters, or $65 for season ticket events, all school age youth and one dinner theater.
