South's Sensations to give concert
The Salina South Middle School Sensations will perform at Art a la Carte at 12:20 p.m. today at Campbell Plaza, in the 100 block of South Santa Fe in downtown Salina.
The Sensations are a select group of eighth-graders under the direction of Royce Young and accompanied by Judy Weber. The 33-member chorus will sing a medley of Disney classics from the 1960s to the '90s. This select chorus has been a performing ensemble for more than 20 years at South Middle School.
In case of bad weather, the performance will be in the Watson Room of Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe.
There is no charge for admission.
Musician is Red Barn's artist-in-residence
LINDSBORG -- Curtis Oberle, a Kansas City guitarist, will be the artist-in-residence at Red Barn Studio through May 17. Oberle will be the first professional musician to be a part of the 11-year program.
A native of Claflin, Oberle is accomplished in differing musical styles ranging from blues, traditional flamenco, rock, jazz and country, in addition to Brazilian and classical guitar.
Oberle has trained hundreds of guitarists who play at all levels.
During his residency, Oberle plans "to compose and record music based upon my experience of the Red Barn, painting a musical portrait of (artist Lester Raymer), the studio and his work," he said.
A reception for Oberle will be from 7 to 9 p.m. May 15 at Red Barn Studio, 212 S. Main. He will perform "Reflections of the Red Barn," a presentation of music composed during his residency. The reception is free and open to the public. The artist will give a guitar master class from 1 to 3 p.m. May 16. Bethany, Lindsborg orchestra to perform
LINDSBORG -- Bethany College students and Lindsborg community members will perform as part of the Bethany College/Lindsborg Community Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Presser Hall.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature popular orchestral works including Sibelius' "Finlandia," Grieg's "Peer Gynt Suite No. 1" and Mozart's "Symphony No. 36 in C Major."
The orchestra is conducted by Richard Koshgarian.
Students to give trumpet, organ recital
LINDSBORG -- Bethany College students Mackenzie Becker and Jordan Smith will perform an instrumental recital at 7:30 p.m. May 15 in Presser Hall. The public is invited to attend.
Becker will perform solo repertoire on the trumpet. Her performance will include the selections "Concerto in E flat for Trumpet" by F.J. Haydn, "Boutade" by Pierre Gabaye and "Bride of the Waves" by Herbert L. Clarke. Becker is a senior instrumental music and instrumental music education major from Plainville.
Smith will perform solo repertoire on the organ. His selections include "Nun danket alle Gott" by Sigfrid Karg-Elert, "Das Alte Jahr Vergangen Ist" and "Der Tag, Der is so Freudenreich" by J.S. Bach, "Noel Suisse" by Louis-Claude Daquin and "Allegro Vivace" from Sonata No. 2 by F. Alexandre Guilmant. Smith is a senior instrumental music education major from Lindsborg.
Becker and Smith will perform "Prayer of Saint Gregory" by Alan Hovhaness as a duet.
Bethany band to salute vets, teachers
LINDSBORG -- Veterans and educators will be honored during the Bethany College Symphonic Band concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Presser Hall on the Bethany campus.
All veterans and current military personnel in attendance will be acknowledged and are encouraged to wear their uniforms. Assisting the ensemble in saluting America and its veterans will be the Lindsborg American Legion Riders.
The 51-member ensemble, conducted by Doug Talbott, associate professor of music, will present several selections throughout the concert that have been made famous through movies. Music from "Saving Private Ryan" will feature a 75-member college/community chorus joining the concert band for John Williams' "Hymn to the Fallen."
The second half of the concert will pay tribute to education, beginning with "Sorcery Suite," a five-movement work composed by University of Kansas professor of music James Barnes. The guest ensemble is the Bethany College Percussion Ensemble, coached by Dean Kranzler, percussion instructor at Bethany.
A reception will follow the concert in the lobby of Presser Hall.

SummerART classes offered by SAC, city
The Salina Art Center, in partnership with the city of Salina Parks and Recreation, offers its annual series of weekly art classes, SummerART 2009, "Real" BIG Art.
SummerART, a series of classes taught by professional artists and art educators, will take place June 16 through July 24 on Tuesday through Friday each week. All classes, offered to students preschool through adult, will be at Salina Art Center, 242 S. Santa Fe.
The theme for SummerART 2009, "Real" BIG Art, is inspired by the work of the art center's artist-in-residence and exhibition artist, Jason Peters, who will be living in Salina and creating work at the SAC Warehouse through July 24.
Registration information and a complete listing of SummerART classes are provided in the Salina Parks and Recreation Summer Activities Guide. Artist-in-residence at Art Center Warehouse
Brooklyn, N.Y., artist Jason Peters will be the Salina Art Center's artist-in-residence through July 24.
Peters will be living in Salina and working at the Art Center Warehouse, 149 S. Fourth. Open studio hours are noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday and 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday May 12 through July 16 (except for June 2, 4, 9 and 11). The public is invited to stop by the Warehouse during open studio hours.
Peters will make art with everyday objects, such as plastic buckets, tires, chairs and surprise materials found in Salina industry and agribusiness. He invites the community to bring items to use in his work.
In conjunction with his residency, Peters will create a work that will be on view in Oakdale Park during the Smoky Hill River Festival, June 11 to 14. Peters also will show work in "Open and as Pointed as Possible" in the Salina Art Center galleries June 5 through Aug. 16. There will be an opening reception for the exhibit from 5 to 7 p.m. June 4 with artist remarks at 5:30 p.m.
Peters received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture and a minor in Asian art history from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Neustrom Challenge winners announced
The 16th annual Gerry Neustrom Young Artist Challenge awards were presented at the closing reception of the exhibition at Salina's Central Mall on April 26.
The Gerry Neustrom Young Artist Challenge, organized by the Salina Art Center and supported by the family of Gerry Neustrom, was established to encourage and recognize young artists in central and northwest Kansas. From the more than 415 works that were submitted, 74 works were selected to be included in this year's exhibit.
The first-place award went to Joe Weaver of Salina South High School for his mixed media installation titled "JOB." Second place was awarded to Republic County High School student Hillary Woods for her mixed media collage "Fun House." Woods also was awarded the People's Choice Award for "Fun House." The third-place award went to Anne Collingwood, of Beloit Junior/Senior High School, for her drawing in graphite titled "We Are Nowhere and It's Now."

'Cabinets of Curiosity' at Lincoln Art Center
LINCOLN -- "Cabinets of Curiosity," an exhibition that is comprised of drawings by Elizabeth "Grandma" Layton on health and aging, will be displayed through May 29 at Lincoln Art Center. Erika Nelson, of Lucas, and Don Robertson, of Hastings, Neb., will exhibit multimedia explorations of scale, space and time through June 26. An opening reception will be today from 5 to 7 p.m.
Layton's work is in the form of situation self-portraits, addressing a range of social issues and topics of the era including women's rights, racism, poverty, homelessness, aging and terminal illness. This exhibit is brought to the Lincoln Art Center with support from the Central Kansas Mental Health Foundation.
Nelson is an artist and educator exploring contemporary art forms in the public realm. As an artist, she explores a multitude of art forms including video, installation and assemblages. She earned her MFA from the University of Kansas.
Robertson completed studies at Scarboro School of Music and received his formal education in Fine Art at Hastings College. He has established a national following for his work in both sculpture and production services for live performances.

Bethany student to open senior show
LINDSBORG -- Bethany College senior Amanda Wehrman, of McPherson, will show her senior art exhibit in Mingenback Art Center Gallery through Tuesday. A reception for the artist will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday with a gallery talk by Wehrman at 2:30 p.m. The exhibition and reception is free and open to the public.
Wehrman is an art education major with a concentration in drawing. Her exhibition will include works in a variety of media. Much of her work focuses on the portrayal of the individual and depicts a full range of emotions through the use of color and line.
Mingenback Art Center, Olsson and Second, on the Bethany College campus, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Art Sampler to be at opera house
McPHERSON -- The Visual Arts Alliance will have its first Art Sampler beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday at the McPherson Opera House.
Rick and Karlene Tyler will perform "Love Letters" at 7 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the opera house. The play deals with the relationship between a man and a woman who have known each other since childhood.
Following the performance, there will be a reception for the actors and for the artists of the new "Mixed Media" exhibit in the VAAM gallery. Andrea Fuhrman, of Abilene, and Mira Mickler Moss and Jerry Exline, both of Salina, are the guest artists. Lewis Keith will perform on the piano and chocolate desserts will be served.

Third Friday to show 'Shake the Devil Off'
Third Friday films' recent series about the power of love and music will end with the showing of "Shake the Devil Off" at 7 p.m. May 15 at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 901 Beatrice.
"Shake the Devil Off," from Swiss filmmaker Peter Entell, documents a critical time six months after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans. People had lost families, homes and work, and now, at St. Augustine Church, the archdiocese is about to close the parish. The parishioners join forces with local musicians and such national figures as Branford and Delfeayo Marsalis to resist.
Third Friday films provide community, entertainment and in-depth examination of issues critical to democratic dialogue. An open discussion follows each film. Donations are welcome, and the public is invited to attend.
'Gem on the Plains' opening in Abilene
ABILENE -- "The Gem on the Plains: Ike's Abilene, 1890-1910," will open with a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, 200 S.E. Fourth. The exhibit will be on display at the library through February.
The exhibit examines Abilene during the time when Dwight D. Eisenhower was growing up there.

Film to be shown at Teens for Christ
CONCORDIA -- The film "Pilgrim's Progress: Journey to Heaven" will be shown at the next Teens For Christ Rally at 7 p.m. May 16 at Brown Grand Theatre, 310 W. 6th.
"Pilgrim's Progress: Journey to Heaven" is a modern adaptation of John Bunyan's classic. The story follows Christian and his companions on a journey from the City of Destruction to the gates of heaven.

Bethany to present short comic opera
LINDSBORG -- Bethany College music students will present "Sweet Betsy from Pike (A Horse Opera)" at 7:30 p.m. today in Burnett Center.
The performers are students in an opera scenes class taught by Jodi Frisbie, assistant professor of music.
The one-act, 30-minute opera was written by Mark Bucci as a comedy for children. It is loosely based on the American ballad "Sweet Betsy from Pike" and recounts the adventures of Betsy and Ike as they travel across the prairie in the late 1800s.
Museum to have stereograph exhibit
REPUBLIC -- The Pawnee Indian Museum State Historic Site will display a stereograph exhibit during May.
The display will feature 19th century stereographs of Pawnee individuals and Pawnee earth lodge villages from the 1860s and 1870s.
Stereographs offer 3-D views of their subjects by positioning two photographs side by side, which are then viewed through a stereoscope.
The museum, eight miles north of U.S. Highway 36 on Kansas Highway 266, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Admission costs $3 for adults and $2 for seniors and students. For more information, contact the museum at (785) 361-2255.
