Old voter registration books available at library

By DARRIN STINEMAN

Salina Journal

Those working on family histories now will find a new resource at the Salina Public Library's Campbell Room of Kansas Research.

Through a series of events, voter registration books that previously had been locked away in storage will land at the Campbell Room. The Saline County Commission voted 3-0 on Tuesday to loan the 55 books -- from the years 1929 to 1973 -- to the library.

County Clerk Don Merriman said the books previously were in the possession of the city of Salina, because the city clerk used to be in charge of city elections. These days, the county clerk handles all elections within Saline County, including city elections.

The city had been storing the books at a storage facility at a Hutchinson salt mine, Merriman said, but they were offered to the county when the city decided it didn't want to pay for storage anymore. Merriman then called Judy Lilly, who heads the library's Campbell Room, about taking the books, and she accepted.

"We get many requests for genealogy research, and quite honestly, we have limited time to do that," Merriman said. "My goal is to turn this sort of thing over to a public entity that can file these away and allow access for the genealogical researchers, family members to come in and look at it."
