Bethany student selected as a finalist

LINDSBORG, Kan.—A painting by Bethany student Noah Flores has been selected as a finalist in the 2007 Fine Art Finals Midwest Scholarship Competition.

Flores, a senior from Marquette, Kan., was honored for his submission “Burning Sunset,” an oil on canvas.

Students currently enrolled in any public or private college or university in 12 Midwestern states were eligible to enter the privately juried scholarship competition. They could submit drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and graphic designs. According to the contest guidelines, winners were selected based on the quality, originality and creativity of their work.

Flores, who is majoring in studio art with a concentration in painting at Bethany, holds an associate’s degree in painting from Hutchinson Community College. He has exhibited work in the Lindsborg area, including a one-person show at Bethany Home. His senior exhibition at Bethany College’s Mingenback Art Center Gallery will be April 24 through 29; a reception and artist talk will be held April 27 at 2:30 p.m.

Flores said he frequently paints landscapes, often in an attempt to “express the feeling of being in a certain place at a certain time.” For “Burning Sunset,” he relied on observations in nature as well as memories of past sunsets.

“I take in what I see, and try to put it on canvas in a thoughtful way that conveys space and light,” he said.
