CONCORDIA — Groundbreaking for the $320 million Meridian Way Wind Farm is 10 a.m. April 11 at the intersection of U.S. Highway 81 and Iron Road, eight miles south of Concordia.
The 201-megawatt farm — to be built in two phases this year — will create eight to 12 jobs, said Kirk Lowell, executive director of CloudCorp economic development group in Concordia.
When the wind farm begins making electricity in December, Empire District Electric Company, Joplin, Mo., will purchase 105 megawatts of the production, and Westar Energy, Topeka, will purchase 96 megawatts.
Meridian Way, owned by Horizon Wind Energy, Houston, is working toward acquiring lands for a third phase, Lowell said.
