Regional boys golf
KNIGHTS' McKINNEY TO STATE -- At Hillsboro, Sacred Heart's Chris McKinney will play in the Class 3A state tournament after shooting 91 and finishing seventh in the regional tournament at Hillsboro.
McKinney had rounds of 45-46 at the Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course. He will come home for the state tournament at the Salina Municipal Golf Course next Monday.
Sacred Heart finished fifth in the team standings with a 414 total. Stephen Lyon had a 101 score, Jeremy Herbic a 108 and Blaise Martin a 114 to round out the Knights' scoring.
Southeast of Saline finished sixth with a 437 score. Joel Prater led the Trojans with a 95. Jacob Fehlman shot a 110, Kirk Nelson a 114, John Henry a 118.
Hillsboro won the team title with a 347 total while Beloit was second at 360. Both teams will compete in the 3A state tournament.
Hillsboro's Daniel Kunantaev was the top medalist with a 76. Teammate Justin Kent also shot a 76 and was second.
Regional softball
ELL-SALINE 18, LINCOLN 4 -- At Lincoln, Ell-Saline opened postseason play with a run-rule victory over Lincoln in a Class 2-1A regional quarterfinal Monday.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the fourth inning, and after Lincoln scored four times in its half of the fourth, Ell-Saline put it away with an eight-run fifth.
Tricia Walker was 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBI for the Cardinals, while Karlie Koelling had a double and a triple among her three hits. Jenny Debold and Mickaela Reiff had two hits each, with Shelly Tillett picking up the victory with four innings of work.
Ell-Saline advances to Wednesday's 3 p.m. semifinal where it will face Sylvan at McKain Field in Minneapolis.
Regional baseball
ELL-SALINE 12, BENNINGTON 5 -- At Galva, the Ell-Saline baseball team used a big third inning to pull away from Bennington and eventually secured a first-round victory in the Class 2-1A regional Monday at Lynn Baldwin Park.
With the win, the Cardinals (10-9) advance to the regional semifinals and will face top-seed Moundridge (18-2) at 2 p.m. today at Galva. The winner of that game will play in the regional title contest at 7 p.m. today.
Ell-Saline trailed 2-1 before scoring six runs in the bottom of the third against Bennington (7-12). The Cardinals added two more runs in the fourth and never allowed the Bulldogs to get closer than four runs the rest of the way.
Vince Froome went 3 for 4 to lead Ell-Saline's attack, while Tate Omli, Austin Nachbar and Dalton Estep had two hits each. Pitcher Ryan Sprinkle worked into the sixth inning and picked up the win.
Bennington got two hits apiece from Glenn Swindler, Josh Zamecnik and Cody Walker.
LYONS 6, SOUTHEAST OF SALINE 4 -- At Marion, Southeast of Saline could not hold on to an early 4-0 lead and saw its season come to an end with a Class 3A regional quarterfinal loss to Lyons.
With the victory, Lyons (8-11) advances to today's 2 p.m. regional semifinal at Marion Baseball Complex to face top-seed Sacred Heart. Southeast ended its season at 9-12.
The Trojans did all of their scoring in the second inning, but Lyons was able to get the game tied with four runs of its own in the third, including three unearned. The game was still tied until the Lions scored twice in the top of the seventh.
Three of Southeast's five hits went for extra bases, with two doubles for Dylan Howe and another for Cole Lilly. Pitcher Ryan Manwaring worked into the seventh inning for the Trojans, striking out eight and giving up four hits.
Regional girls soccer
EMPORIA 3, SOUTH 0 -- At Emporia, the South girls soccer team never could find any offense in it's season-ending loss to Emporia.
With the loss in the Class 5-1A regional quarterfinal on Monday, the Cougars ended their season with a 3-12-2 record. Emporia (10-6-1) advances to face top-seed McPherson (12-3-1) in today's 6 p.m. semifinal at McPherson.
Jessica Decker's goal in the 14th minute put Emporia in front of South 1-0, but the Cougars were able to hold the score there until the second half. The Spartans put the game away with goals from Brittany Meza in the 54th minute, and another from Kylie White in the 64th minute.
South, with only three shots on goal in the match, could not put any pressure on Emporia.
