Man charged with making false report

A homeless man who told police that he had been jumped by two men is being accused of making a false report.

Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield said police were called about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when a man showed up at the Salina Fire Department, 125 W. Elm, and said he had been attacked.

The man told police that he was walking in the 500 block of North Santa Fe Avenue when he was jumped by two black males, Mansfield said. The man told officers that the men thought he was Hispanic, and they warned him to stay away from the north side of Salina. The man said the two also cut him on the arm. He suffered six superficial cuts that didn’t require medical treatment.

While being questioned by police, Mansfield said, the man said he had fabricated the story and that the wounds on his arm were self-inflicted.

Joe R. Lane, 18, who told police he was homeless, was arrested on a charge of making a false police report.
