Baseball
RUSSELL 18-11, SE-SALINE 0-4 -- At Gypsum, Jake Brown came within a walk of pitching a perfect game for Russell in the opener and the Broncos went on to post an NCAA sweep.
Brown struck out 13 and had the one walk. Russell scored six runs in the first, third and fourth innings of the four-inning game. Ryan Manwaring took the loss.
Russell (19-1) broke a 0-0 tie in the second game with six runs in third inning. Jordan Wyatt took the loss for Southeast.
Cole Lilly led Southeast's offense with a double.
The Trojans (9-11) play Lyons at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Marion in the first round of the Class 3A regional tournament.
SALINA CENTRAL 7-0, HUTCHINSON 6-8 -- Seth Myers hit a grand slam, a triple and drove in five in leading Central to the victory in the first game of an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League doubleheader at Matson Field.
Myers belted his grand slam in the top of the fifth inning and gave the Mustangs a 7-0 lead. Hutchinson rallied with three runs in the fifth and three more in the seventh.
Danny Backes was the winning pitcher.
A.J. Farmer and Michael Hoffart were each 2 for 3 for Central, one of Farmer's hits a home run.
Hutchinson pitcher Ben Heeney shut down the Mustangs in the nightcap, limiting them to four singles. The Salthawks had just five hits and were aided by six Central errors.
Central ends the regular season with a 10-10 record and will play in its Class 5A regional tournament next week. Pairings and sites will be announced Saturday.
DERBY 15-6, SALINA SOUTH 12-2 -- Salina South lost a slugfest in the opener, then couldn't get it offense untracked in the second game.
Derby scored six runs in the top of the 10th inning of the first game, but South answered with three in the bottom of the 10th before the rally ended.
Tanner Vinson hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 9-9. He was 3 for 5 in the game. Brett Callahan and Brady Wallace also had three hits apiece while Evan Myers and Jesse King each had two. South outhit the Panthers 17-12.
Myers (1-4), the fifth pitcher of the game for South, took the loss. The Cougars committed seven errors in the game.
South's offense couldn't duplicate its effort in the first game, finishing with four singles. Callahan was the losing pitcher in the game that halted after six innings because of lightning.
Reliever Kyle Kegley was the winning pitcher for Derby in both games.
South (5-13) plays at Newton in its last two games of the regular season.
Postponements
IT'S RAINING AGAIN -- Wednesday's rain forced a couple of postponements.
Sacred Heart's baseball doubleheader in Wichita against Wichita Trinity was postponed until today, starting at 3 p.m.
The NAIA Region 4 softball tournament, scheduled to be played at Wall Park in McPherson, was postponed until today and moved to Two Rivers Sports Complex in Wichita.
Kansas Wesleyan will play Park, Mo., at 9 a.m. while Bethany will face Ottawa at 9 a.m. Both teams will play at 11 a.m. if they win; 1 p.m. if they lose. The championship game is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday.
Soccer
SALINA SOUTH 2, TOPEKA WEST 2 -- The South girls soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-2 tie against Topeka West on Thursday at Salina Stadium.
South's Brandi Jones had both of her team's goals in the first half and the Cougars led 2-1 going into halftime. West got it tied on Sarah Schneider's goal in the 45th minute, and neither team scored in two overtime periods.
South will take a 3-11-2 record into its postseason opener next week. The Cougars will learn their first-round opponent and the location of that game when pairings are announced Saturday.
Softball
SACRED HEART 5-12, REPUBLIC COUNTY 0-3 -- Caitie Ziegler threw two complete games and the Knights strung together 21 hits in notching an NCAA sweep.
Ziegler pitcher a four-hitter in the first game. Abby Wittman, Christina Arias, Katryn Streit and Taylor Simoneau each had two hits as the Knights totaled 10 for the game.
Sacred Heart snapped a scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth inning and added solo runs in the sixth and seventh.
Ziegler allowed eight hits in the second game. Wittman led the Knights' 11-hit attack by going 3 for 5. Tracy Hoelting, Katryn Streit and Kelci Mack had two hits apiece as Sacred Heart built a 9-0 lead before Republic County scored three in the sixth inning.
Sacred Heart concludes the regular season with a 15-5 record and plays Lyons at 6:15 p.m. Monday, in the first round of the Class 3A regional tournament at Bill Burke Park.
