COLBY -- Some Special Olympians rode along Saturday and others served as judges as 15 Colby-area truckers joined in the World Largest Truck Convoy.
The trucks covered nine miles in and around Colby and raised $2,600 for Special Olympics events in Kansas, said Jane Mentlick, who with her husband, Joe Mentlick, organized the celebration at Truck Town, near Interstate Highway 70.
"People gave above and beyond," she said.
A gathering in Gardner, a suburb of Kansas City, Kan., attracted 13 trucks. Truckers paid $100 to take part in the event that included goodie bags, lunch and entertainment.
About 100 people, including athletes from the Colby Angels Special Olympics group from Colby and Oakley, and other northwest Kansas towns, attended.
The athletes chose the truck owned by James House, Brewster, as their best of show; Daryl Goetz, Park, best paint and Larry Kogl, Atwood, best chrome.
The 15 entries included a Schwan's truck and driver Dwight Gage from Salina, Jane Mentlick said.
The goal is to raise money for Special Olympics and break the Guinness World Record for the largest convoy, which was set at 1,800 in the 2006 convoy events in 40 states and Canada, raising $544,000. It will be several weeks before results from other convoy events are compiled. Some haven't been staged yet, Mentlick said.
