A Salina woman who answered an ad for a guaranteed loan ended up paying about $800 and receiving no loan.
Kimberly K. Munson, 36, 1111 Osage, answered an ad in the Buyer's Guide Sept. 12 and was approved to receive a loan of $5,000, said Salina Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield. First, she was instructed to pay $750 -- which the company said would be refunded in one year -- for credit insurance on the loan.
She was faxed the loan contract by Barrister Resource Management Group of Salt Lake City and instructed to wire the $750 to Allinsured in Alberta, Canada, Mansfield said. She paid $48 for a moneygram to pay for the insurance.
Mansfield said Munson reported that the loan was supposed to be deposited in her bank account the next day. When it was not, she contacted the company and was told she needed to pay an additional $500. She then requested a full refund and called police, Mansfield said.
As of Thursday, Munson hadn't received the refund.
