Ammonia leak forces evacuation at Tony's
Tony's Pizza evacuated its plant Sunday because of an ammonia leak.
Harry Smith, director of manufacturing at Tony's, 3019 Scanlan, said the spring on a valve on an ice maker failed.
Someone in the plant recognized the smell and employees were evacuated at about 6:15 p.m. as a precaution, he said.
"It looks much worse from the road than it is," Smith said. "This is standard safety procedure."
Smith said the valve was quickly isolated on the roof and was being repaired Sunday evening.
The leak was in an interior room where no employees were working and never reached a dangerous level, he said.
Smith said employees would be allowed to return to work once the air was evacuated of the ammonia smell.
