Easy Home, a new business in the wing of Sunset Plaza that was badly damaged by fire in November 2007, will celebrate its grand opening today with somewhat of a carnival atmosphere.

The lease-to-own business at 1123 W. Crawford will have a 10 a.m. ribbon cutting sponsored by the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

As part of its grand opening, Easy Home is giving away hot dogs, cupcakes and soft drinks and will host a Mariachi band, a local youth group performing traditional Mexican dances, a disc jockey and an inflatable "bounce house" for children. Easy Home manager Debbie Hecox said the U.S. Army is sponsoring a climbing wall at the event, and the Salina Animal Shelter will be on hand with pets available for adoption.

"Hopefully, we will have a line outside the door starting at 7 a.m.," Hecox said.

Easy Home sells furniture, home appliances, bedroom sets and electronics on a lease-to-own basis. Customers can pick up an item and start making payments on it, then return it if they decide they do not want it or cannot afford the payments.

"We're user-friendly," Hecox said. "If your financial situation changes, you can call us and we'll pick it up with no penalty."

Don Weiser, senior vice president of the chamber, said he's happy to see companies open in the plaza after the fire.

"It is a great thing for the community," he said. "It shows the economic growth and the economic stability here in town and in this shopping center."
