A nickel for their thoughts

LINDSBORG — Smoky Valley High School junior Kate Emler didn’t have to look far to find a subject for her political action project.

It was right on her social studies teacher’s T-shirt.

Her teacher, Margo Lysell, wore a T-Shirt with the phrase “Save Darfur” printed on the front to a school event. Emler was shocked at how many people, and not just fellow students, had no idea what Darfur stood for.

“People were joking around, wanting to know ‘Who’s Darfur?’ ” said Emler, 16. “It wasn’t just students, it was people in the community, too.”
