Doctor recognized for work

5/1/2008
Hundreds of thousands of residents of developing countries need eye glasses, cataract surgery or other kinds of eye care.

Retired Salina optometrist Dr. Dale Cole this month became a nominee for a national honor after he was recognized by his peers statewide for his career working to bring better eyesight to those in need, in more than 20 nations around the globe.

Cole was an automatic submission for America’s 2008 Optometrist of the Year after the board of the Kansas Optometric Association awarded him state recognition at the association’s meeting April 24-26 in Topeka.

The national award is to be announced in June at the meeting of the American Optometric Association in Seattle.

Cole is preparing this November to go with other vision professionals from Kansas and across the country to India, where the group plans to stay about 21/2 weeks, giving eye exams and fitting donated glasses to impoverished residents.
