Doris Marian Christina Swenson



LINDSBORG -- Doris Marian Christina Swenson, 82, Lindsborg, died Sunday, June 3, 2007.

Mrs. Swenson was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Chappell, Neb., the daughter of the Rev. Charles August Strandberg and Edith Marian (Fredrickson) Strandberg. She was baptized Dec. 4, 1924, at Berea Lutheran Church, Chappell, Neb., and confirmed Aug. 15, 1939, at Sharon Lutheran Church, Sharon Springs. She was a graduate of Wallace County Community High School, Sharon Springs, received a teaching certificate from Bethany College and attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. She was a homemaker and taught in Prairie View School, a one room school in rural Wallace County, from 1943 to 1945. She then taught sixthgrade for two terms at Weskan. She married Vernon G. Swenson on Aug. 14, 1949, in Sharon Springs. They were commissioned as missionaries to Africa in 1954, retiring in 1995.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Philip Strandberg and Paul Strandberg.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Vernon G. Swenson, of Lindsborg; two sons, Daniel and wife Kathy of Manhattan and David and wife Cherie of Roseburg, Ore.; two daughters, Sharon Barber and husband Mark of Lindsborg and Rebekah Peterson and husband Tim of Monument; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Bethany Lutheran Church, Lindsborg. A private family burial will be in Salemsborg Lutheran Cemetery, Smolan.

Memorials may be made to the African Missions of the ELCA, in care of Bethany Lutheran Church, or to Bethany Lutheran Church, 320 N. Main, Lindsborg 67456.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.
