Students Complete Farmway Internship Program

9/19/2011

Farmway announces the completion of its Agronomy Internship Program as part of its initiative to develop prospective cooperative employees.

Five college-age students completed the 2011 Farmway summer internship program.

Austin Bechard, of Beloit, is a sophomore at Kansas State University, studying Agribusiness. Bechard is the son of Jeff and Tammy Bechard. Cade Hewitt, of Beloit, is a junior at Kansas State University, studying agronomy with a biology option. Hewitt is the son of Marne and Mark Hewitt. Kaitlyn Martin, of Glasco, graduated from Cloud County Community College in May 2011 and transferred to Kansas State University studying agronomy. Martin is the daughter of Deb and Matt Martin. Karl Dawn Hobbs, of Beloit, is a senior at Kansas State University studying animal science and agricultural education. Hobbs is the daughter of Dan and Rita Hobbs.  Melissa Pachta, of Linn, is a senior at Kansas State University studying agricultural economics. Pachta is the daughter of Jim and Marilyn Pachta.

Farmway’s internship program allowed students the opportunity to develop not only agronomy sales exposure, but also learn leadership and communication skills, ultimately fostering career development. During the program interns learned what it’s like to work within a cooperative system; gaining a unique insight and understanding that cannot be achieved by classroom education alone.

The agronomy interns assisted in agronomy functions such as soil sampling, crop scouting, checking fields to be sprayed and various other duties throughout the summer.

Andrea Harms, sales manager and team leader of the internship program, said "we were quite impressed by the interaction and professionalism of the interns, and we’ll be looking forward to next year’s summer program."

The program provided the interns with invaluable experience when considering a career in the agricultural industry while also providing opportunities for the college students to map out career paths by gaining hands-on experience, skills and knowledge.

Julie Harrison, head of Human Resources, says Farmway strongly believes in encouraging and empowering young talents.

"We are dedicated to supporting the youth in in their career path. The summer program was the right platform where interns could experience the real world and explore career opportunities available to them once they graduate," Harrison said.

Farmway is accepting applications for the 2012 Summer Internship Program. Those interested in learning more about the workings of Farmway are encouraged to apply. For more information, call 785-738-2241.
