Assaria man ordered to stand trial in stabbing case

Wednesday, September 08, 2010 5:22 PM

An Assaria man accused of fatally stabbing his wife and attempting to murder his sister-in-law was bound over for trial Wednesday, and prosecutor Christina Trocheck notified the court that she intends to seek a Hard 50 sentence if Michael “Andy” Paulson is convicted.

Paulson’s arraignment, where he will enter a plea, is set for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 20 in Saline County District Court.

Paulson, 40, listened as his sister-in-law Jessie Putman described events leading up to the stabbings on July 6. The stabbings occurred about an hour and a half after Putman and Valerie Paulson went to the Paulsons’ Assaria house to retrieve some of Valerie’s belongings.

Beginner’s luck

SOLOMON -- Jack Cossette isn't sure what his encore will be after his first corn crop contended for the best yield in Saline County, the state and possibly the nation. Good land, seed, equipment, chemicals, fertilizer and some expertise contributed, he said, but the sky has to be generous for all of the factors to gel. "You can't knock Mother Nature," said Cossette, of Salina. "If she doesn't give you the rain, you're not going to have anything."

We don't need more games

More than 100 out of 854 federal judge seats are vacant, thanks to tactics by U.S. Senate Republicans who are stalling approval of presidential appointments.

The Associated Press reports that 47 of the appointments are considered emergencies because of growing caseloads.

Republicans' delays have been so successful President Obama has won fewer nominations than Richard Nixon did at the same point in his presidency 40 years ago. Two appointments have been in limbo for 13 months.

Bands from Mo., Kan., to raise money for animals

HAYS, Kan. (AP) -- Several bands from Missouri and Kansas are gathering in Hays this weekend to raise money for a program that spays and neuters feral cats. Sixteen bands will be performing Saturday at Fort Hays State University in the Katze II music festival. Organizers say last year's event raised about $1,000 for the FHSU Cat Program, and this year they're hoping to double that amount.
